Your training responsibilities as an employer:

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board oversees Ontario’s workplace safety education and training system, including First Aid, provides disability benefits, monitors the quality of health care, and assists in early and safe return to work.”

All employers who are subject to the Occupational Health and Safety Act must comply with Regulation 1101 of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act.

Employers need to be aware of the mandatory requirements for first aid and CPR training for their employees.  In general, first aid requirements are determined by crew size:

The minimum recommended first certification for small work forces of 1-5 employees according to the The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario is Emergency first aid & CPR, which includes AED training.  At least one employee must be certified and should be on duty and easily accessible at all times.

Example 1: A small work force of 5 employees at an office requires at least one trained person to perform first aid and CPR.  He or she must be available at all times.  A receptionist would be the ideal person to train because he/she is always stationary at the front desk, as opposed to a busy manager where he/she may be in and out all the time.

Example 2: A warehouse crew of 5 has their immediate supervisor trained in first aid and CPR but is a busy man and is often off site running errands.  In order to be WSIB compliant, an additional employee is required to be trained.  This employee must be available at any given time to provide first aid and CPR.

For work forces with 6 or more employees, standard first aid and CPR is the core requirement in accordance to the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.

There must be a minimum of one trained first aid employee on duty at any given time who is certified.

If your workplace has multiple areas and departments, you will be required to have several employees trained.
