If you are starting a nursing, paramedic, dental, or other health program, bls training for healthcare students in toronto is probably already on your placement checklist — and it is usually one of the items with a hard deadline. Schools and placement sites want proof that you can respond to a cardiac emergency before you walk onto a unit or out on placement. This guide explains what Basic Life Support (BLS) is, how it differs from CPR Level C, what it covers, how long it lasts, what it costs, and where to take it in Toronto and the GTA.

Why healthcare programs ask for BLS before placement
Healthcare students work around people whose health can change quickly. A patient in a hospital bed, a client in a dental chair, or a resident in a long-term care home can go into cardiac arrest with little warning, and the first person who notices is often a student. Programs ask for BLS because it is the level of resuscitation training designed for healthcare providers and first responders, rather than for the general public.
BLS focuses on high-quality CPR as part of a team response — exactly why colleges and universities list BLS, not a general CPR course, on their placement requirements.
Requirements vary by program, so check your school’s placement list before you book. If it asks for BLS, a CPR-only certificate may not be accepted in its place.
BLS is not the same as CPR Level C
Students ask us about this difference more than almost anything else, because the two courses sound similar and the names are easy to mix up.
What CPR Level C covers
CPR Level C is resuscitation training for the general public and for workplaces that require CPR on its own. It covers CPR and AED use for adults, children, and infants, along with choking relief. At The Academy for First Aid and Safety, CPR Level C costs $54.99 plus HST. A standalone CPR Level C certificate is valid for 12 months. It is the right course for many jobs — but it is not a provider-level BLS certificate.
What BLS adds for healthcare students
BLS builds on the same core skills and teaches them to a healthcare-provider standard: high-quality compressions with real-time feedback, two-rescuer CPR, AED use, airway and breathing support, and coordinated team response. It is the certificate healthcare programs and placement sites ask for by name. Our BLS course also costs $54.99 plus HST, and the BLS certificate is valid for 12 months. See our Basic Life Support (BLS) training page for what the course includes.
What BLS training covers in class
Our courses are aligned with the 2025 AHA guidelines, and the skills are practised hands-on, not just watched on a screen. In a BLS class you will practise:
- Recognizing cardiac arrest and activating the emergency response right away
- High-quality chest compressions for adults, children, and infants
- One-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR, switching roles the way a clinical team does
- Using an AED quickly and correctly, including on children and infants
- Relieving choking in adults, children, and infants
- Working as part of a team during a simulated emergency

Students also practise on the Academy’s CPR Taylor female mannequin, whose three electronic sensors — depth, speed, and chest recoil — score your compressions as a percentage, so you can correct your technique in class instead of guessing.
How long a BLS certificate lasts — plan to renew every year
A BLS certificate is valid for 12 months. That is shorter than a first aid certificate, and it catches students off guard: many assume every certificate lasts three years. It does not. First aid certificates — Intermediate First Aid (also called Standard First Aid) and Basic First Aid (also called Emergency First Aid) — are valid for 3 years, but BLS renews annually.
Practical tip: book your renewal early in the semester, not the week your next placement starts — classes fill up at the start of each term.
If your program also requires first aid
Some programs ask for first aid as well as BLS. Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C costs $114.99 plus HST and is valid for 3 years; Basic First Aid and CPR Level C costs $84.99 plus HST and is also valid for 3 years. When a student takes Intermediate (Standard) First Aid with BLS, they receive two certificates — a first aid certificate valid for 3 years and a BLS certificate valid for 12 months — because the two credentials expire on different cycles. Check your placement list carefully so you book every certificate it names, and nothing it does not.
Where healthcare students can take BLS in Toronto and the GTA
The Academy for First Aid and Safety runs classes in Toronto, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Barrie, Hamilton, and Kitchener-Waterloo, so most GTA healthcare students can train close to home or close to campus instead of crossing the city. If you are based in the city itself, see our Toronto first aid, CPR and BLS training page for Toronto class details.
BLS is $54.99 plus HST. Book backwards from your school’s submission deadline, not forwards from today, so you keep buffer days if a class fills.

Frequently asked questions about BLS for healthcare students
Is BLS the same as CPR Level C?
No. CPR Level C is general-public resuscitation training for adults, children, and infants. BLS is provider-level training for healthcare workers and students, with two-rescuer CPR, team response, and high-quality compression feedback. Most healthcare programs ask for BLS by name on their placement checklists.
How long is a BLS certificate valid?
A BLS certificate is valid for 12 months, so healthcare students renew it every year. First aid certificates are different: Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and Basic (Emergency) First Aid are each valid for 3 years.
How much does BLS training cost?
At The Academy for First Aid and Safety, BLS costs $54.99 plus HST. Register online at https://www.academyfor1staid.ca/register-for-a-course or call 905-884-6036 (Toll-free: 1-877-659-3215) — use promo code SAVE-TEN for 10 percent off.
