First Aid Training for Security Guards in Toronto: Be First on Scene, Ready to Act

First aid training for security guards in Toronto — students practising chest compressions in class

If you work a lobby, a mall, a condo, a construction gate, or an event entrance, first aid training for security guards in toronto is not a nice-to-have — you are often the first person on scene when someone collapses, is injured, or stops breathing. Guards are visible, nearby, and expected to act while help is on the way. This guide explains which course most guards need, what the training covers, how long the certificate lasts, what it costs, and where to take it in Toronto and the GTA.

Why first aid training for security guards in Toronto matters on every shift

A security guard’s post is where emergencies find people first. A visitor faints in a lobby. A worker is cut on a site. A shopper collapses near an entrance. A resident is found unresponsive in a hallway. In each case, the guard is usually the closest trained person, and the minutes before paramedics arrive are the minutes that matter most.

Training gives you a clear sequence to follow under pressure: check the scene, check the person, call for help, and start care. It also helps you communicate clearly — where you are, what happened, and what you have done — so arriving responders can take over without delay.

Many employers and client sites ask guards to hold a current first aid and CPR certificate, and they check expiry dates. Keeping yours current protects your shifts and your options when you apply for a new post.

Which course do security guards need?

For most guard roles, the full course is Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C. It is also called Standard First Aid — Intermediate and Standard are the same course under two names, after a recent naming change. At The Academy for First Aid and Safety it costs $114.99 plus HST and the certificate is valid for 3 years.

See our Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and CPR page for what the course includes.

When Basic First Aid may be enough

Basic First Aid and CPR Level C — also called Emergency First Aid, again the same course under two names — is a shorter course covering essential first aid and CPR. It costs $84.99 plus HST and is also valid for 3 years. Some employers accept it, others ask for Intermediate by name. Check your employer’s or site’s requirement before you book, so you do not have to retrain to upgrade later.

What about CPR on its own, or BLS?

CPR Level C on its own costs $54.99 plus HST. A standalone CPR Level C certificate is valid for 12 months; CPR bundled with a first aid certificate follows that first aid certificate’s 3-year validity. BLS, at $54.99 plus HST and valid for 12 months, is provider-level training mainly for healthcare workers and students — most guard posts ask for first aid and CPR Level C, not BLS. If a posting names a specific course, follow that wording.

What you practise in class

Our courses are aligned with the 2025 AHA guidelines, and the skills are practised hands-on. In an Intermediate class you will practise:

  • Checking a scene for hazards before you approach — a core guard habit
  • Recognizing cardiac arrest and starting high-quality chest compressions
  • Using an AED quickly and correctly for adults, children, and infants
  • CPR for adults, children, and infants, and relieving choking
  • Caring for bleeding, wounds, and shock while help is on the way
  • Responding to breathing emergencies and sudden medical emergencies
  • Head, neck, and spinal concerns, and bone, muscle, and joint injuries
  • Hands-on anaphylaxis training, including neffy epinephrine nasal spray practice — the Academy has included hands-on neffy training in its courses since October 2026

Students also practise on the Academy’s CPR Taylor female mannequin, whose three electronic sensors — depth, speed, and chest recoil — score your compressions as a percentage, so you leave knowing your technique meets the standard, not hoping it does.

How long your certificate lasts — and planning renewal

Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and Basic (Emergency) First Aid certificates are each valid for 3 years. That long validity is helpful, but it also makes expiry easy to forget. Set a reminder well before the expiry date printed on your certificate, and rebook while you still have buffer time if a class fills.

If you let a certificate expire, an employer or client site may remove you from a post until you retrain. Renewing early keeps your record continuous and avoids a last-minute scramble before a new assignment starts.

Where security guards can train in Toronto and the GTA

The Academy for First Aid and Safety runs classes in Toronto, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Barrie, Hamilton, and Kitchener-Waterloo, so guards who live or work across the GTA can train near home or near a post instead of crossing the region. If you are based in the city itself, see our Toronto first aid, CPR and BLS training page for Toronto class details.

Group training is also available for employers, associations, and communities that need several guards or staff certified together — ask when you call if you are booking for a team.
